pencil rolls and journal covers

another party this weekend, so a pencil roll and journal was requested.

the batting I had on hand was a little thicker than needed for a journal cover, but it turned out ok.

what I particularly like about this set ........

is it is all repurposed from one of lil sis's cute dresses.

next to it is a thrifted pillowcase I was going to use as well, but I got it all out of the dress. even the white in the pencil roll and the inside of the journal cover is the lining from the dress.

Late yesterday afternoon the girls received and unexpected invitation to a birthday party across the street, to be held at 11am today.

(Note to self..... keep a supply of coloured pencils on hand, to save yourself a mad dash to the newsagent. Coloured pencils are expensive at the local newsagent!)

lots and lots of pencil rolls......

Sunday is the school festival (read school fete) and I made pencil rolls. 10 in fact. My favourite was the hot chilli pepper one. Tried to mix it up and not make all of them too overtly little girlie..

then if that wasn't enough, DD2 has two birthday parties to go to tomorrow! so two more pencils rolls and colouring in books.

I still have a cake to bake for the festival and deliver tomorrow!

That's right, more pencil rolls. DD2 was invited to another party. Twins AGAIN! But get this....

The party was to be held at a local park, on the same day the local council had a day on. The idea, the council stuff was an added attraction.

So DH kindly took both girls, DD2 to her party, while he and DD1 could wander around the exhibition.

EXCEPT.... no one was there for the party! Now to be fair, the weather was iffy. BUT the Mum who had organised it didn't make contact. DH rang her from the park - her mobile was turned off. They walked around for two hours, by which time he had had enough. Poor DD2 was in tears.

Finally today at a Kindy function came face to face with the mum. She had this story for me about how they were there early on, how she made contact with others and how she didn't know how to contact me. Now firstly I rang her mobile to RSVP the party, so she could have found my number, but secondly and more importantly, WHY WAS HER PHONE TURNED OFF?

I try to give people the benefit of the doubt, but this one has really irked me.

Ok, Ok, rant over...... as you should always look for the good side in any situation - I am now two pencil rolls ahead in my quota for the school/parish fete craft stall!

Yep! Another one!

So yes, DD2 had another birthday party to go to yesterday afternoon, so I made another pencil roll. I am getting rather quick at whipping these up. If only I had a supply of pencils and colouring books, I wouldn't need to leave home.

So to make up for the Mr Incredible fabric I went with a Ben 10 colouring book, think that shows that I am kinda up with the times. And yes this is another one! I used different ribbon last time. :) I am feeling more confident about Homemade gifts now. Thanks for your response.

some thoughts on home made

DD2 went to a birthday party this morning. Twins - a boy and a girl. I made a "Nemo" pencil roll for the girl and a "Mr Incredible" one for the boy.

This morning I was at the shops when they opened to buy some colouring pencils and colouring in books - Fairies for her and Ben 10 for him. Made me think that perhaps Nemo and Mr Incredible are "so yesterday". I hope not. But I think it will make me use the fabric I buy and not hold on to it waiting for that special sometime.

Anyway...... I left these until last night to make, and late last night at that. So it got me thinking about home made gifts and is it worth the effort. Right now I am making gifts because I have the fabric here and it means I am not spending a lot of money. Everyone you talk to says how tight things are at the moment. So economy affects my choice.

In the past I only gave home made gifts to people I knew would appreciate the time and effort that had gone into what I made. Those who would see the value in it.

During my many sewing breaks last night, I had an email conversation with a friend of mine. Her daughter was the recipient of the first pencil roll I made. When I told her what I was doing she came back with ....

"You are so clever to make those pencil rolls. XXX uses hers so much and takes it practically everywhere we go."

Made my night I can tell you!

Then this morning when I got up after way too little sleep, DD2 quietly asked if "they" were ready. The way her face lit up when I showed her made it worthwhile for me. Who cares what the recipients think!!

Finally!!!

Lost my motivation for awhile there. DD2 is going to a birthday party tomorrow.

To say she is excited is an understatement. So what gift to give the birthday girl?

A pencil roll was requested. so a pencil roll was made. This afternoon we are buying a colouring in book. Hopefully a "My Little Ponies" one.

So the only other sewing I have done this year? A very simple skirt for DD2, made back in January. And it is out of My Little Pony fabric! It is a very basic skirt but she thinks I am clever!

Rollin' Rollin' Rollin'

Two more pencil rolls and a crayon roll. Some extra family coming Christmas Day this year so the two pencil rolls are for my cousin's daughter and son. The crayon roll is for DH's little god daughter. The slots for the crayons needed to be a little wider, but I still think it is cute. Especially with the crayon fabric. All 3 are getting an activity/colouring book as well.

Did the last of my Christmas gift shopping today. Only the food to be bought now.

Pencil Roll

After admiring the pencil rolls made by Bloom, I decided to give it a go myself. I don't have the stash to make the awesome rainbow background like her so I kept it simple with some Barbie prints, white homespun and some ribbon.

It contains one set of 12 colouring pencils and 2 lead pencils.

I am pretty pleased with how it turned out, especially for a first attempt.

Note to self - don't use a white background for coloured pencils again, what were you thinking!!
